Injection therapy
John trained in upper and lower limb injection therapy at the University of Nottingham, alongside hand specialists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, and surgeons, In addition, he has undertaken extensive training in ultrasound-guided injection techniques through SMUG (Sports Medicine Ultrasound Group). More recently, John has qualified with a Master of Physician Associate Studies (MPAS), which includes formal training and competence in intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
Clinically, John commonly performs injections for: - Osteoarthritic knees and ankles - Shoulder conditions including subacromial bursitis and frozen shoulder - Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) - Osteoarthritis of the thumb
Treatment follows a clearly defined pathway from a governance and prescribing perspective. If clinical assessment identifies that injection therapy may be approporiate, the case is discussed, via secure communication, with the prescibing doctor. (Dr Jonathan Taube - team doctor at Bridgend Ravens RFU where John used to be head of medical services). Dr Taube independently reviews the clinical information and, where appropriate, makes the prescribing decision. Injections are then administered strictly in accordance with the prescription and within John’s professional scope of practice, with full contemporaneous clinical records maintained throughout.
Following treatment, patients receive written correspondence for their GP confirming the prescribing clinician, the nature of the procedure, informed consent, and outcome, ensuring continuity of care and appropriate documentation.
