By using fine needles inserted at specific points on the body, acupuncture aides the flow of energy or ‘Qi’ around the body’s energy channels or meridians. It is the correct, balanced flow of this energy which leads to health and wellbeing; stagnation or blockages result in ill health and disease. By taking this approach to achieving and maintaining good health, acupuncture can offer a potential solution to problems that may have been resistant to other treatments and can help improve your sense of wellbeing – even if you have no particular problem but just feel ‘out of sorts’.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
Traditional Acupuncture is a system of traditional medicine that has been in use for over 2,000 years. It still features in mainstream healthcare in China and is often used in combination with western medicine. It is now one of the most popular forms of complementary medicine throughout the world.
What’s the Difference Between Acupuncture and Dry Needling?
Although acupuncture and dry needling both use very fine needles, they are based on different principles and treatment goals.
Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and focuses on restoring balance within the body by stimulating specific acupuncture points along energy pathways, known as meridians. It is commonly used to support overall wellbeing, reduce stress, improve sleep, and help manage a wide range of physical and emotional conditions.
Dry needling, on the other hand, is based on Western medical anatomy and physiology. It targets tight muscles and myofascial trigger points to reduce pain, release muscle tension, and improve movement. Dry needling is often used for musculoskeletal issues and chronic pain, such as back pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain.
Both treatments can be highly effective, and the right option depends on your symptoms, goals, and clinical assessment. In some cases, they may even complement each other as part of a personalised treatment plan.
