WHAT IS MLD?
MLD stands for Manual Lymphatic Drainage (not to be confused with lymphatic drainage massage). Your lymphatic system manages the fluid levels in your body, helps fight infection and removes waste products through your urine.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a non-invasive therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specialised and gentle, rhythmic, pumping techniques to move the skin, thus stimulating the Lymphatic System to work harder. This speeds up removal of excess fluid and waste products.
MLD generally uses a light, painless pressure as your lymphatic vessels start shallow in the skin layer (dermis) and properly trained therapists know how to manipulate them, redirecting fluid away from swollen areas.
WHO BENEFITS FROM MLD?
MLD is highly targeted and is used to treat a variety of medical and wellness concerns but particularly:
- Lymphoedema: It is a core component of treatment for managing severe swelling (lymphedema), particularly in patients recovering from cancer treatments or lymph node removal.
- Post-Surgery Recovery: It is frequently used after cosmetic surgeries (like liposuction) or orthopedic procedures to minimise postoperative soft-tissue fibrosis, scar tissue, and swelling.
- General Wellness: Some individuals use MLD to aid in general detoxification, boost immune function, and alleviate fluid retention associated with conditions like fibromyalgia or chronic venous insufficiency.
SPECIFIC BENEFITS
- Reduction of Swelling and Oedema: Post-surgical swelling is common, and MLD can help reduce this by improving lymphatic flow and decreasing fluid buildup.
- Improved Healing: By enhancing circulation and lymph flow, MLD can speed up the healing process and reduce recovery time.
- Minimisation of Bruising: MLD can help clear out the blood by-products more efficiently, reducing the appearance and duration of bruising.
- Pain Relief: Gentle massage techniques can alleviate discomfort and reduce pain associated with swelling and inflammation.
- Scar Tissue Management: MLD can help prevent and reduce the formation of fibrotic scar tissue.
- Prevention of Complications: By ensuring better fluid management and reducing the risk of infection, MLD can prevent complications such as seromas and hematomas.
